Under My Thumb

WHAT a disappointment > the 1981-82 American/European tour came on the back of what would be > well, up until 2066 > the Rolling Stones last huge hit > Start Me Up > from the well-received Tattoo You album.
But after rousing Still Life album opener Under My Thumb there’s nothing much starting up on this wooden > lifeless Stones live recording from that tour.
Two new songs are a cover of Eddie Cochrane’s 1956 rockabilly hit Twenty Flight Rock and Going to a Go-Go, by soul group The Miracles, 1965. But the Rolling Stones versions are no big deal.
The Still Life live intro is recorded music by big band leader Duke Ellington and the outro > a slice of Jimi Hendrix’s searing version of the American national anthem.
ROLLING STONES TOUR A HUGE HIT
More than 2 million people saw the Rolling Stones during their 50-plus concert tour of America > September to December 1981 > the biggest tour the band had so far undertaken.
Bass player Bill Wyman says in his book Rolling with the Stones that on this mostly stadium tour at some venues the band played to more people than on their first US tour in total, in the early 1960s.
The 1982 European tour had over 1.5 million fans in 33 gigs across 23 cities > three times as many people as the Rolling Stones previous European tour in 1976.
