SISTER MORPHINE
Days of drug haze said to be mostly lyrics by Mick Jagger’s then girlfriend Marianne Faithfull > she overdosed soon after on morphine and ended up in hospital in Sydney, Australia. Album: Sticky Fingers

STONED
The dopey English censors let this one get away. Being November 1963, maybe they didn’t know what “stoned” actually meant. Censorhip was much more stringent back then. Album: Singles Collection: The London Years (an excellent compilation set)
MOTHER’S LITTLE HELPER
An in-your-face to those in the mid-1960s chattering classes and their “tsk, tsk” at young-uns taken a fancy to drugs > marijuana deemed the main danger back in the days before the onset of LSD soon after. Album: Aftermath

SWEET VIRGINIA
Country rocker dripped in bourbon and Southern swagger > acoustic guitar start builds pace with sauntering sax and boozy sing-along chorus. Album: Exile On Main Street
COMING DOWN AGAIN
A Keith Richards song possibly about coming down after another heroin hit > but even Richards himself is not sure. “I said not long ago that I wouldn’t have written it without heroin. I don’t know if it was about dope. It was just a mournful song” the human riff said in his 2010 autobiography Life. Album: Goats Head Soup
CONNECTION
About the rigours of airline travel brought on by constant touring and “my bags, they get a very close inspection; I wonder why it is that they suspect ’em
They’re dying to add me to their collection” (Jagger-Richards). Written a few months before the infamous 1967 police drug raid on Keith Richards’ home. Album: Between The Buttons
BEFORE THEY MAKE ME RUN
And the man on the run is Keith Richards, facing at the time the possibility of a long jail sentence in Canada for heroin and other substances. He had so much, Richards was charged with “possession of cocaine and heroin with intent to traffic.” Keith does the vocals on this one. Album: Some Girls
19TH NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
A ride through mental mayhem > puts down rock chicks hanging around the periphery of London’s Swinging Sixties. “On our first trip I tried so hard to rearrange your mind; But after a while I realized you were disarranging mine” (Jagger-Richards). Album: High Tide And Green Grass

DEAD FLOWERS
Country romp has mocking Mick taking comfort from being mistreated in love by retreating to the basement > “with a needle and a spoon. And another girl to take my pain away”. Album: Sticky Fingers
MONKEY MAN
Guitar licks rip between Charlie Watts drums as Jagger > “a flea-bit monkey” who’s friends are all junkies but “that’s not really true” > licks his wounds. Album: Let it Bleed

CHAMPAGNE AND REEEFER
“Bring me champagne when I’m thirsty; Bring me reefer when I want to get high” > original song by blues great Muddy Waters > and the Stones rip out a great live version with another blues great Buddy Guy guesting on guitars and vocals. Keith Richards was so impressed with Buddy’s performance he gave him one of his guitars as Guy left the stage. Album: Shine A Light.
